“I'd like all my advisees to utilize me for all the knowledge I've amassed during my 10+ years in the industry. No question is too small or ambitious! Conversations could range from how to get started in the industry, how to execute a specific lighting plan, or how to best position your business for success leading into a shoot. I'm here to help!”

MY 7 DIMENSIONS OF CAREER SUCCESS

  • What do I love most about my work?

I love solving problems and finding the most efficient solutions. At it's core, this is what being a Cinematographer is all about. You must wear multiple hats, delegate tasks effectively to all the different departments that you're managing, and still have enough bandwidth to give all your energy to the Director and execute their vision. It's all a giant puzzle piece that results in incredibly rewarding and collaborative work at the end of the day.

  • What do I think is the biggest misconception newcomers often have about my field of work?

What most people don't foresee going into Cinematography and Filmmaking in general is how grueling the process can be; both physically and mentally. Being on set is hard physical work and navigating the industry as a newcomer who has aspirations to rise through the ranks and find themselves at the top is a daunting and often very scary journey if you don't have mentors to guide you along the way.

  • What do I think is the biggest threat to my industry and/or field of work?

Technology is our biggest ally and threat. Camera and lighting technology is rapidly changing every day and as a Cinematographer, you must be constantly educating yourself on the newest tech so that you can make educated decisions in your approach to shooting.

  • What is your personal approach for maintaining work-life satisfaction?

It's easy to lose yourself in the grind. It's incredibly important to find things that make you happy and continue to nurture those things. Most importantly, don't allow relationships fall to the wayside, because these relationships are what's going to keep you grounded.

  • How do I think people in my field should adapt to stay relevant throughout their career?

Always be watching the trends in our industry. As a Filmmaker, you must always stay true to your voice and style, but it should never prevent you from opening your eyes to the world around you. Film is always evolving, we must allow ourselves to evolve with it.

  • Looking back, what's one thing I wish I knew about my field before I started?

Looking back, I wish I knew that there is no clear cut path to becoming a Cinematographer. A mentor once told me, "If you want to be a Cinematographer, be a Cinematographer. It's advice that actually imbued a certain grit and carried me to where I am today. However, that may not work for everyone; and that's totally fine. There are so many ways to enter this industry, and it's important to know that often times, the road is very twisty and treacherous but if you hang in there long enough, you'll find your way.

  • What POV do I bring to the table that challenges the status quo of my industry?

The film industry is going through a huge shift where minorities are finally getting their chance to share their vision and stories. Historically, Cinematographers don't look like me, but that's quickly changing. My goal is to bring up the next-generation of filmmakers who have not had their chance to share their vision and to offer it to the world.
